When do I need a Landscape plan for Resource consent?

You need a Resource Consent for any activity that impacts the environment and isn't explicitly allowed by the Resource Management Act (RMA) or your local council's District Plan, such as building, earthworks, or using land in a way that deviates from the rules- Pools need Building consent for fencing etc. Timbre.nz

Why use a Landscape Architect? Why not a designer and do it yourself?

Professional accountability. Registration means formal training, industry standards and a professional body behind the work. If something doesn’t stack up, there is someone answerable for it.

Plans that are ready to build. Detailed drawings and specifications mean your contractors know exactly what to build, which cuts down on guesswork, costly changes and surprises on site.

An understanding of your land. Slope, drainage, soils, wind, salt exposure and existing vegetation all shape what will thrive. Planning for them from the outset saves you from replanting and rebuilding later.

Confidence with consents. Landscape work can trigger resource consent requirements, particularly near waterways, on the coast or on sloping sites. A Landscape Architect knows what’s likely to be asked for and can prepare documentation that council can work with.

Better long-term value. Considered design, the right plants in the right places and a clear staging plan mean a garden that matures well and holds up, rather than one that needs fixing in a few years.
